The next frontier
There's no denying that Artificial Intelligence (AI) is upon us and it is set to be one of the biggest commercial opportunities in today's economy. Although the highest growth is predicted in sectors such as health, retail and financial services, the aviation industry could certainly take advantage of the benefits new technology and machine learning can provide. AI could be the next step in improving aviation safety, fleet maintenance, customer experience and much more.
But what of the role of humans? There is much speculation in film and the media about whether AI will replace humans in the future, but the average human brain is far more complex than any artificial network created so far. It is more likely that AI will be a 'clever assistant' which does not replace the human but will extend the capabilities of humans already engaged in certain pursuits, for example, evolutionary algorithms to help ATCOs identify optimal structures and flows, digital cockpit assistants that interpret weather radar images and intelligent autopilots, to name a few.
